School-Based Mentor Job Description

POSITION:     Kids ‘n Kinship School Based Mentor

SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Ability to accept a child as they are.
  • Ability to love and care about children in a nonjudgmental manner. 
  • Basic friendship skills such as being reliable, accepting, listening, and suggesting. 
  • Basic educational skills such as listening to reading, assisting with 4th/5th grade math, following teacher instructions to help the child with assignments.
DUTIES:
  • Responsible for keeping weekly contacts with the child, for up to one hour in the school setting (classroom or afterschool program at the school).
  • Responsible for keeping weekly contacts with the child during the summer vacation months at the volunteer’s home/child’s home or in the community such as the library.
  • Attendance at appropriate trainings including the initial orientation, mentor training and diversity/poverty training as scheduled. 
  • Consistency in meeting with the child at school, communicating with the teacher, and letting the teacher and the child know if you will not attend a scheduled session.
  • Notify Kids 'n Kinship staff if there is to be a meeting with the child outside of the school setting during the school year, after arranging with the parent.
  • Keep aware of the school calendar for non school days.
  • Maintain ongoing contact/consultations with assigned Kids 'n Kinship staff person and teacher - sharing concerns, highlights, and ideas.
PURPOSE: Develop a positive relationship with a child to reduce isolation, help them feel connected with their school, encourage learning and prevent/reduce at-risk behaviors.

TIME REQUIRED: One hour per week during the school year and one to four hours per week during the summer months. (Time will vary depending on the type of contact/activity planned.)

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT:

Minimum of one year – the goal is a long-term relationship
